Carbon Fiber vs Titanium: Choosing the Core Frame

A material analysis of the Atomic structural skeleton.

When specifying the chassis for the Atomic series, we looked to aerospace rather than furniture design. The requirements were contradictory: massive structural rigidity with minimal mass.

The Case for Titanium

Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) offers the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metallurgic element. It provides a distinct dampening quality that absorbs high-frequency vibrations from the floor. For the Elite Series, we use cold-forged titanium for the primary load-bearing joints.

The Carbon Advantage

For the back-frame components, we utilize 3K Twill Carbon Fiber. It allows us to orient the fibers to control flex patterns precisely—rigid vertically for support, compliant torsionally for movement. This "tuned flex" is impossible with isotropic materials like aluminum or plastic.
